Roland squinted his eyes against the sun, drawing the net in tightly against the side of the boat. Tensing his muscled arms, he heaved the writhing mass of fish into the boat, glimpsing enough to sell, as well as make dinner for himself, his mother, and Anastasya. Today was a good haul.
Shifting his feet, he sat down, and began rowing the short distance to shore.... weary of the few Capall Uisce he saw there.

Phoenix buried her hands in Fros' mane. The flaxen mane and tail were just one of the stunning characteristics of the beast beneath her. He was incredibly large, standing at 18.1hh he dwarfed her. His unique coloring added to his uniqueness. He was the only palomino sabino capall uisce in existence, and he belonged to her. Not that it had ever been easy for Phoenix to capture him, per say. But today they weren't on the beach to train, they were on the beach for a relaxing ride, something they both seemed to need.
Phoenix smiled softly, she patted Fros' neck and urged him forward. She rode with just a bridle today, no saddle. She preferred this method of riding but most people frowned upon that. "Easy boy," she crooned softly to him as she saw his ears perk up. The beach normally calmed them both but something in the land opposite the ocean had pulled Fros' attention. "Fros, come back to me boy," she crooned again, trying to pull his attention back to her.
Before Phoenix could calm Fros down from his mystery scare he ran. Skill and luck is the only thing that kept her on his back when he took off. One hand fisted in his mane while her legs held on tightly, the other trying to turn him away from the ocean, she would let him run alongside it, but not into it. Eventually she collected herself, centered on his back tried pulling him up with both of her hands. He collected, slowing down into a ground eating canter that she could easily sit to. She still crooned sweet nothings to him and tried to relax him but his ears were focused on what was ahead of them and his body was tense, but she was braced for something to happen now.
Fros spooked at the water, not the water exactly but a boat landing on the shore. He reared up, Phoenix clinging to his neck for dear life as he nickered loudly. As soon as he quieted down some she slipped from his back. Her bare feet hitting the warm sand. She was little and had only dressed in shorts and a bikini top having planned on swimming in the ocean with him. She crooned to him as she gazed at the boat docking on the shore. "I'm sorry if we bothered you sir," she called out to him.

Roland looked up, eyes widening momentarily in a sort of fear. The grey eyes were pinned on the horse primarily, only flicking to the girl for a moment. She was young, younger than his own daughter, and inwardly, he wondered yet again why the ones so young decided to risk the rest of their lives. He loathed the pyres that would burn in the coming weeks, the burials that would take place because the youngest weren't yet experienced enough to realize the true dangers of the Capall Uisce.
Would this be the year Anastasya was taken from him? Or would this girl before him now be among the dead?
All of these thoughts flitted through his mind in a manner of seconds. The wind mused his hair slightly, and he reached up a tentative hand to brush it away from his eyes. His vision had to remain clear. He wouldn’t risk anything on the beach this time of year.
“It’s alright.” He said slowly, eyes breaking from the stallion before him for just a moment, so he could skim the rest of the beach. The other water horses were far enough off that it gave him a tiny prick of relief. “And there’s no need to call me sir. The name is Roland Saunders.”
He leaned down to gather the net… just as a fish flipped out. It flopped along the sand, heading straight for her Capall before he could stop it.

Phoenix stroked the stallion's nose as the man addressed her. "I'm Phoenix Jarvis." she said softly, loud enough for him to hear but closer to her normal tone of voice. Her blond hair whipped around her face as she crooned quietly to the stallion, trying to ease all the tension from his body.
A fish flopped hazardously toward them, ruining the calming she had accomplished. Fros' head tossed up, his eyes going showing white, he reared up. Phoenix fell backwards as his hoof hit her side. She watched as he came down and then back up, landing on the fish after each rear. Through clenched teeth she crooned to him, asking him to stop, to calm down. Once he finished pulverizing the fish, his head hung low to the ground and he looked at Phoenix, almost apologetic.
He stepped towards her, his muzzle nuzzling her hair and then the spot where his hoof hit her side. Her arms wrapped around his neck and he pulled her up to a standing position. "Good boy, easy boy, everythings going to be all right." She stroked his ears and turned towards Roland. "I'm so sorry," she started. SHe didn't know how to apologize for Fros ruining his fish.

Roland stepped back from the rearing water horse, his eyes widening in shock. His hand very nearly reached to the boat for one of his harpoons… As it calmed however, he grimaced guiltily. “No, I’m sorry… Don’t worry about the fish, its just one and I’ve got plenty more.” His eyes moved to where the hoof had taken her side, looking for any sign of injury in the sharp-eyed way of any worried parent. He could see a mark, but that didn't mean that there couldn't be any injuries below the surface. “Are you alright?”

Phoenix ran her fngers along her side and winced when they went over where he had kicked her. A pain had started blossoming there, but she tried to ignore it. "Nothing that has never happened before, he didn't hit me too hard, I promise." A smile played at her lips and she absently stroked her Capall. Lucky for her he wasn't your average Capall and for the most part protected her more than he hurt her. "And don't be sorry, accidents happen." she said lightly with a smile. She didn't want this man to fret over something that couldn;t be prevented.

Roland shook his head slowly back and forth. That wasn’t good enough. The look in her eyes was a pained one, very much reminding him of the look in Anastasya’s eyes when she’d stumbled into the kitchen with her shoulder bloodied from her own Capall. He cleared his throat softly. “Let me rope the boat off on a rock. I’ll leave the fish with it. I want to take a look at your side to be sure.” His voice was fatherly, firm, offering no room for argument.

Reluctantly, Phoenix nodded for him to do so. Just don't come near Fros, he won't let anyone but me touch him and I don't want you to get hurt, he's been a nasty piece of work to some people who have tried to pet him because he's "pretty"." her voice was slightly annoyed at that. She had special signs all around him that said don't touch but apparently people were too stupid to read the signs and realize that the capall was dangerous because they saw him being gentle with her.
SHe slpped the reins over his head and asked him to stand while she moved closer to Roland, If he insisted on doing this she would at least make it as safe for him as possible, which meant moving away from her security blanket. "it's nto bad, he's left worse on me." She muttered with the attitude of the teenager she was.

He narrowed his eyes against hers, before rolling them altogether. Typical. Rubber people always thought they were invincible. But hey… He’d been there once. He knew the feeling… But he also knew what it was like when you finally reached the age that bouncing back so easily became difficult.
Roland reached down and rubbed his hands off on his flannel, making sure they were reasonably clean before he reached out to gently probe the flesh of her side. His eyes were pinned to her face, searching for even the slightest reaction. If even her eyes drew in pain, he was going to darn well make sure the horse got put away for now.

Phoenix winced as his fingers grazed her side. Sure, she could play tough and pretend that it didn't bother her, but that only worked until he touched it, even she could see the outlining of Fros' hoof. "It's not that bad, I promise." She said through clenched teeth. She was probably doing a poor job of convincing him that she was okay but she would try anyways. Fros snorted somewhere behind her, but kept his head low, apologetic.

Roland snorted. "You make a pathetic liar, pardon my choice in words. Put your mount away and let me take you to get a herb to ease some of the pain. That glance couldn't have been pleasant in the least. And don't go trying to convince me otherwise." His face and voice were stern. "We are going one way or another.... Don't make me go find your parents, child."

Phoenix bit back a mean retort about her parents. "My parents are dead." she bit out the response, it was a touch subject even though they died before she really knew them. Her fathers sister had raised her but she had gotten into a car accident and passed away before she was able to turn eighteen. She turned away from the man and walked back to her capall. He would go home if she asked him too, for the most part. She spoke soothing words and he nosed her ribs gently. He turned away from her and trotted off and she returned to the man. Where are we going?"

He grimaced, regretting the remark as soon as she responded. He stood awkwardly while she turned to send her Capall off. Roland sighed, looking at the wound. "I apologize... And we will be going into town to meet up with my daughter. She's got what I'll need to take care of that wound. Alright? I'll drive."

Phoenix nodded gently. "It's really not that bad, I have a first aid kit at my bookstore, you don't have to go through this trouble." She protested to him, she hated being an inconveince to anyone, let alone a total stranger. She sighed, her hand resting protectively over her ribs while she waited for him to respond.

He snorted and shook his head. "Shush. Its my fault, and I'm going to take care of it, regardless." He shifted, gathering his burlap sack which contained his catch, and caught her elbow to steer her toward the peer. Roland felt obligated.... Like he said, it had been his fault. The horse would not have spooked had he been more careful.
